Bloody Smoke Detector!
Friday 14th October 2011
Bought a new house. Bloody smoke detector bleeping its head off. Tried in vain but I can't get open the thing up to reset or replace the battery or replace it.
Any suggestions (other than belting it with a lump hammer)?
Cheers. BB.

Not sure....can't open it! I presumed it was hard wired and had a battery in it also?

Some of mine come with a 'shoe' that screws to the ceiling, you don't twist these you push the whole unit in one direction. Try that?

Mine are hard wired with a battery back that beeps when low up and the battery compartment is a Krypton Factor 10 to get in. Think there is a clip and it hinges down, look see from a ladder helped.

Rip it out, replace it with a mains one with a 10 year sealed battery.
They should be replaced every 10 years anyway so if it's older than that it needs replacing

That's what I am trying to do but I can't get into it to remove it without ripping a hole in the fecking ceiling.

Some of them have a small plastic lock inserted to stop removal, this should just pull out.
Others have a slot that you need to put a flathead driver in, then pull/push/turn/hit with hammer.
Good luck!

Smoke
Who's it made by? there'll probably be fitting instructions on the manufacturers website, and probably a technical helpline too.
If it's an aico there'll be a little arrow on the side- you shove a small slotted screwdriver in at the arrow to unclip, then the unit slides away from the screwdriver and off the base.

This is how mine is opened also, not an aico one though. Poxy things, especially when they start beeping at 3am like last time the battery went!

Just had same problem at my sisters house smoke alarm is EI 150 which is removed by pushing whole alarm sideways in direction of arrow just a firm hit with palm of hand and the unit slides off the four carriers that are on the shoe that remains attached to the ceiling then pull out the four pin plug, but the units are sealed and do not open even when you get them off, and they are not repairable you will need to buy new units which are available at about £35 each on internet.
A word of caution you will need to pull the fuse from the mains consumer unit that feeds the alarms before attempting to remove unit as they are mains supplied.
Hope this helps

Whatever you do, make sure you end up with a working smoke alarm, and if your house has gas, a CO detector.

Heat alarms are a better idea in the kitchen, carbon monoxide alarm near the boiler and smoke alarms on each flloor hallway. Job done. No more wafting the feckin thing with a tea towel when the toaster decides its going to burn your bread.
